A married American couple go to the San Sebastian Festival and get caught up in the magic of the event, the beauty and charm of the city and the fantasy of movies. As Mort drones on, “Rifkin’s Festival” quickly becomes another movie about a man filled with worries about his profession, unrequited love, philosophical quandaries, and concern about marital infidelities. This time, he certainly seems bitter about the state of film culture, even as he continues to revere the classics. ‘Rifkin’s Festival’ Review: Woody Allen Travels to Movie Memory Lane The filmmaker seems to acknowledge the world has changed in this light tale of a … This makes Woody Allen’s Rifkin’s Festival, kicking off this year’s event in San Sebastián, a singular phenomenon – not so much a movie, more a piece of site-specific art. Oh, and don’t worry: The jokes about how he’s also a terrible Jew are just around the Spanish corner. But Allen has a surprise up his sleeve: Rifkin runs his own festival in his head, in the form of a series of dream sequences pastiching canonical classics from the likes of Truffaut, Godard, Fellini and Buñuel.
But it soon becomes apparent that Mort is de trop, as Sue embarks on a none too discreet flirtation with the glamorous cinéaste. But as the film explores San Sebastian — with its marvelous architecture and sprawling beaches — it starts to feel like “Rifkin’s Festival” is content to get lost with its anti-hero rather than trying to find a substantial narrative to support his existence.
(Let’s try not to think about Jason Biggs.) Like a lot of recent Allen movies, it’s easy enough to figure out the intentions at hand early on. Gina Gershon and Wallace Shawn in Rifkin’s Festival.
